Throughout the 2024-2025 school year, I worked with artist-in-residence, Eliza Gregory, and a team of three other students to create artwork and documentation for the student farm. At the end of the year, we curated all of our work and exhibited at Axis Gallery in Sacramento, CA.
This map was curated after interviewing a few students who worked on the Student Farm. They gave ideas of what the "future" could look like for the EcoGarden at the Student Farm. Then we mapped out what ideas they had and added to the existing infrastructure of the farm. My fellow team members worked to make a "present" map, which was a reflection of the Market Garden, and a "past" map, which was a reflection of the Woods area. The three of these came together to drive our exhibition design and led us to focus on these themes.
A lot of our process just came down to documenting the farm whenever we were there and speaking to new people each time we were there to learn more about the student farm. These are some of my pictures from the farm throughout the whole school year.
One of the ideas I gathered from the students' future ideas was bird banners. They were interested in seeing banners that had photos or illustrations of birds that could be found around the student farm. I spent a few hours using the Merlin Bird app to identify the calls of the birds on the farm, then created a list for one of my fellow interns to use to illustrate the birds. From there, we took the illustrations and put them on colorful backgrounds so the text and image were clear.
We also wanted to connect with the students who worked on the student farm and have a piece of the student farm for visitors of our exhibit to have something to take with them and remember the student farm. We created the idea for seed packets. We used a template to cut out all of the packets from reused paper bags, then glued them together and sealed them with seeds inside. We collected the seeds from the student farm and had them available to take at our gallery.
One of the final things we created was a photo collage. There was an old photo collage in the Farmhouse at the Student Farm, but we wanted the current students to have something to look back on that is a little more recent. We took photos of students as well as sourced photos from the students themselves in order to make the collage. We then worked together to put it together.
Finally, we put the exhibit together. Eliza, my fellow intern, Brian, and I put together this exhibit. We spent hours measuring, hanging, and designing the layout for this exhibition. This was my first experience with exhibition design, but I really enjoyed it and thought our final result ended up great and really encapsulated the Student Farm.
